Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/28/2013

Another week, another pitcher as Anibal Sanchez put on an amazing display of missing bats and set the tone for his team to win a key weekend series.  Sanchez struck out Tigers record
17 Atlanta Braves on Friday night in only 8 innings, technically having a chance to tie Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood's single game record had he come out for the 9th. In the process, lowering his ERA to a microscopic 1.34.  He didn't, but he nearly single-handedly turned around a team that had lost 5 of their last 6, into a team that has now won 4 straight and is on the rise for a presumable AL Central title. For now, Anibal Sanchez will have to settle for Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/21/2013

There's a new phenom on the NL East pitching scene, and it's not Stephen Strasburg. In fact, he out-dueled Strasburg.  Matt Harvey is setting Major League Baseball on fire with dominant start after dominant start.  This week, he easily downing Strasburg  7-1.  And for the season, he's up to 4-0 in 4 starts, 7 innings or more, 10 hits.  Total.  32 punch outs, 0.93 ERA.  This is Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax type numbers.  And he's younger than Strasburg.  And doesn't have a juggernaut offense.  The more I see, the more I like.  And he is a worthy Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/14/2013

Amazing finish to The Masters on Sunday, and this blog always loves new major winners, let along the biggest of the majors (says me).  Adam Scott nailed two key puts to earn his first green jacket, and cement his legacy among the PGA elite, and, of course, Australia.  Almost single handedly redeeming Aussie great Greg Norman and his coming up short in majors over his career.  Adam Scott nailed a key 20-foot birdie putt on 18 to seemingly win the tournament, only to be forced to a playoff when Angel Cabrera answered with an approach and tap to match Scott's 4-day score.  After the first playoff hole at par for both, Cabrera missed a birdie putt by an inch, then Scott nailed an 12-footer under pressure to win the major.  He epitomizes what this blog considers, Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/7/2013

It's rare that teammates win back-to-back Sportsmen of the Week, but Carmelo Anthony could not be ignored.  And as a result of his star performance, the New York Knicks roll on.  Anthony averaged 42 points per game, and along the way his team disposed of the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder, both on the road.  The other two contests were also against playoff teams (Atlanta and Milwaukee), the last two of the week, he also registered 12 or more boards.  In the process, he's surged to the NBA lead in scoring, ahead of Kevin Durant.  Dare we say MVP? At least he's the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/31/2013

This week's honor goes to a player who has stepped up to be the Scottie Pippen or James Worthy of the New York Knicks (to Carmelo Anthony) in being a key element of what is an eight game winning streak for the club.  J.R. Smith was phenomenal, averaging 30 points per game, defeating the rival Boston Celtics twice, pouring in 32 points or more in 3 of the 4 games.  And he's not even a starter.  But as the Heat appear knicked, I mean nicked up, the Knicks appear poised to test them in the playoffs.  But J.R. Smith wins this week's Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!
