Sportsman of the Week Ending 8/27/2017
The
baseball pennant race continues to dominate the sports headlines, and
our Sportsman of the Week has leapt from potential to reality in a week,
or at least this month. Former number 2 overall pick Byron Buxton
(taken one spot after Houston Astros 2015 Rookie of the Year and 2017
All Star Carlos Correa) is meeting his potential. And in the process,
has the underdog Minnesota Twins in a position for their first playoff
berth since 2010. Over eight road games, Buxton went 11-33 (.333) with 5
HR, 11 R, 10 RBI. He also chipped in two steals and made one of the
defensive plays of the year (link).
Buxton may finally be ripening into one of the greats like Mike Trout,
Bryce Harper, or Aaron Judge. But he for sure is our Longhorndave
Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/23/2017
Baseball enters the last week of the opening month, and perhaps the game's best player shined. The Washington Nationals Bryce Harper lit the National League East on fire, on the way to what might be his second MVP in three seasons. The Nationals marched through Georgia and Queens with a 6-0 record, establishing themselves as the team to beat in the East. Harper led the Nats batting 11-20, with 7 of those 11 hits for extra bases (4 2B, 3 HR). He also scored 10 of his teams 33 runs over the six game span. The Nationals ended the week with the best record in baseball, and it might be time that Bryce is mentioned as the top of MLB elite. For the second time in blog history, he is a worthy Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 5/10/2015
It's a very busy sports calendar, but this week's Sportsman of the Week was almost unstoppable. The Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper had a three game sequence for the record books. Bryce Harper hit six home runs in three games; the last was a walk-off home run to beat the rival Atlanta Braves. For the week Harper was 10-22, 1 2B, 6 HR, 13 RBI. And his team was 5-1 as they closed within 4 games of first place after a stumbling start. The 2012 Rookie of the Year is already half way to his career high of 22 HR. And it's not even May 15. Congratulations to our Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!
