Sportsman of the Week Ending 5/31/2026

There's a new star pitcher emerging in baseball and his name isn't Paul Skenes.  It's Jacob Misiorowski.  Okay, they're both stars, but Misiorowski continues to emerge as the superstar he seems destined to become.  The tall, lanky right hander had two amazing games this week and seems as if he's just getting started.  The 24-year-old shut down both the Cardinals (5-1) and Astros (2-0) as the Brewers once again seem poised for another, quiet, division title.  If they make the playoffs, this time they'll have an ace that can nail down two games for them.  Over the week, Misiorowski had 14 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 20 K.  His ERA is entering Bob Gibson level at 1.65.  Will the Brewers finally make and win a World Series?  If so, the Miz will need to lead, he is the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 10/19/2025

The game everyone is still buzzing about and it may not ever stop.  Shohei Ohtani went all Little League best player on the field but it wasn't Little League, but the National League Championship Series.  As the Los Angeles Dodgers storm through their playoff bracket (now 9-1 so far in these playoffs). Shohei keeps doing it all.  Of course by all, we mean hitting and pitching.  In NLCS Game 4, Shohei took the mound and went 6 innings, just 2 hits and 10 strikeouts over 100 pitches.  But to quote the telemarketing campaign "but wait, there's more".  Batting leadoff he staked his starting pitcher (in this case, himself) to a 1-0 lead (which ballooned to a 3 run lead by the end) with a leadoff home run.  But wait, there's more.  He hit two more solo home runs and drew a walk for a perfect day at the plate as the Dodgers eased to a 5-1 win and their fifth pennant in 9 years.  Tying a playoff home run record with 3 home runs in a game (joining Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth, Jose Altuve, and many more).  What can't he do?  Time will tell.  But Shohei Ohtani is the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 8/7/2022

Another amazing week in Major League Baseball as the playoff picture continues to focus and teams, now after the trade deadline, make their sprint toward Division titles.  No team did more for their cause than the St. Louis Cardinals.  Let by Nolan Arenado, the Cardinals have won seven straight games, including sweeps of the rival Chicago Cubs and vaunted New York Yankees.  Arenado was unstoppable, batting .524 (11-21), with 8 runs, 3 HR, and 8 RBI in six games over the week.  The Cardinals averaged 5.5 runs per game which was more than enough to carry the week.  As the Cardinals surge into first place over their rival Brewers, Arenado shines as the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 9/13/2020

Hardly anyone expected a no hitter to be pitched in 2020.  Odds were strongly against TWO no hitters.  What if both were from teams in the same city?  One of the most unlikely candidates for the Chicago Cubs defied odds.  Alec Mills eased his way through 9 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers with no batted ball in play that resulted in a baserunner.  In other words, a no hitter.  The soft tossing Mills drew contact but nothing that was able to land safely.  The 28 year-old only struck out 5 while having well more than that hard hit balls.  Sprinkle in 3 walks, no runners due to error, and it seemed way too easy.  Mills had only started 15 games with but 5 career wins.  But his sixth will be memorable for sure.  And earns him the Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 10/14/2018

The MLB playoffs chug on to the League Championship Series round, and superstars are emerging.  The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to take their second straight National League pennant and if they do so, it might be behind someone unexpected on opening day.  Manny Machado was acquired just after the All Star game, and is paying dividends.  During the week (clincher against the Braves, plus first two games against the Brewers), he took over two key games for wins.  He finished the 3 games 5-13 (.385), 1 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI and 3 R.  The Dodgers have their hands full with a hot Brewers team, but Machado is looking all the part of the difference between a World Series or not.

Sportsman of the Week Ending 9/30/2018

Our Sportsman of the Week is for the last week of October.  But he's been playing baseball like October.  Milwaukee Brewers all-everything outfielder Christian Yelich has put his stamp on this season with an amazing last week to force a one-game playoff with the rival Cubs.  A game in which his team won.  Yelich led his team to seven straight wins to end the regular season.  They needed every last one.  He then led them to an improbably win on the road in the one game playoff.  The Brewers now have home field advantage throughout the National League Playoffs.  Yelich for the last eight games/wins: 11-24, 5 HR, 17 RBI, and was walked an Bonds-like 12 walks.  That's a .639 on-base percentage.  Yelich won the National League batting title and finished 2 HR and 1 RBI away from the first NL triple crown in 80 years.  Pretty good, huh?  Not to mention he played 9 games fewer than the HR/RBI leaders due to an injury in April.  He's the best player in the National League, and our Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!
