Who am I?

I'm from Houston, a graduate of the University of Texas, a fan of the Houston Astros and Houston Texans. But this blog will be about the "greater sports", whatever that means.

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/12/2026

Another year, another green jacket.  A generational talent did generational things on the biggest stage as Rory McIlroy surged ahead, fought tough stretches, surges by competitors, was behind, then ahead, then finished.  One stroke ahead of Scott Scheffler.  That's what champions do.  McIlroy becomes only the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters championships joining legends like Nicklaus, Woods, and Faldo.  And in today's game, it's just more difficult.  He was also either first or tied for first after each round.  Impressive.  It wasn't a perfect performance, but the best in the biggest tournament as McIlroy won his second green jacket in two years and is the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week for the third time!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 8/24/2025

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.  No more.  The best player to never win a PGA event has won one and it was the literal Tour Championship.  Tommy Fleetwood had too many runners up to count, including Majors.  Including recent events.  Playing the best golf on the tour by a duffer not named Scottie.  This week.  He did it.  Finished three shots clear of the field and an elite field at that only the 30 best that qualified.  Nobody nailed an impossible putt against him.  He didn't get the shanks on the last couple of holes.  Closed.  With ease.  By all counts one of the best gentlemen and sportsmen on the tour, and now the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/14/2024

He's a machine.  Best player in the world and proves it.  Again and again.  And for the second time in 730 days he's wearing the Green Jacket of The Masters.  Scott Scheffler has the amazing consistency we haven't seen since Tiger Woods and reminiscent of Jack Nicklaus and his peers and before.  He doesn't have to play his best round on any given day.  He just needs to do what he's capable of and not make mistakes.  At The Masters this week, Scheffler took a crowded field into Sunday and made it academic on the last four or five holes.  No mistakes.  Making putts.  His four under par was the best round by anyone in the Top 29.  We're watching greatness and appreciate.  Scott Scheffler is the Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 1/21/2024

An amazing sports weekend with Australian Open tennis, NFL Playoffs, NBA and NHL action had perhaps the most shocking result in the third PGA tournament of the year.  For the first time in over 33 years, an amateur won a PGA tour event.  20-year-old (barely) Nick Dunlap shocked a pretty deep PGA field to win the American Express in La Quinta, CA.  Dunlap torched the courses for a -29 total, including a 60 on moving day Saturday.  He held on a shaky tee shot on the 72nd hole to par out for the win.  And this was no watered-down field.  Justin Thomas.  Xander Schauffele.  Scottie Scheffler.  Jason Day.  Patrick Cantlay.  All the big names were distanced by the sophomore from Alabama.  A name to remember as only the third amateur victor in a PGA event since 1957.  Dunlap is a worthy Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 6/19/2022

A thrilling weekend of golf culminated with a surprise United States Open champion fending off both veterans and younger players alike.  27-year-old Matt Fitzpatrick dazzled on Sunday, outlasting several strong contenders like John Rahm and Scott Scheffler.  But it was Will Zalatoris who's hunger for his first major proved the last opponent standing.  Fitzpatrick played near flawless golf, hitting every green and ensuring success with a great shot on 18.  Zalatoris had a long-shot birdie putt that missed by an inch and Fitzpatrick won his first tournament in the Americas, and his first major.  Consistency was the Englishman's calling card all weekend, with a 68-70-68-68 to finish 6-under par.  An effort more than worthy of Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 4/10/2022

What a week of sports.  It started with the NCAA Men's Basketball finals, transitioned to the Major League Baseball Opening Day, but finished with the iconic Masters tournament, the first with full fans in 3 years.  And it did not disappoint.  The surging best player in golf lapped the field to win not only his first Masters, but first major.  Scott Scheffler has been one of the best up and coming golfers for over a year now.  Including his inclusion on the dominant American Ryder Cup team in which his inclusion was questioned, as usually spots go to veterans, to a 4-0 matchup performance.  But in Augusta, he was unmatched.  Consistency, big shots, and nerves of steel, and talent.  Lots of talent.  Scheffler is one of the next generation greats, and a worthy Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!
