Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/20/2022
The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is perhaps the most anticipated in the sports calendar with the volume and variety of games and teams all vying for a National Championship. While there are usually some interesting upsets, the Sweet 16 typically recalibrates to the highly ranked teams. Tell that to the St. Peter's Peacocks. With absolutely nobody pushing them through on their brackets, they are dancing through to the second weekend. The face of the amazing two game stretch is probably best personified as Doug Edert. The slight guard came off the bench in both games to lead the team in scoring for the weekend with amazing shot after amazing shot. What he didn't get in playing time, he made up for in efficiency. Edert came through in the clutch in a monumental upset of the 2 seeded Kentucky Wildcats with a near-flawless 5/7 from the field (2/2 from 3-point territory) and 8/8 from the free throw line in a stunning 85-79 overtime win. He followed that up with a 4/6, 1/2, 4/6 performance in the downing of Murray State 70-60. He played no more than 25 minutes in either game but his clutchness defined what the Peacocks did. And that was, survive and advance. Edert is a worthy Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/31/2019
The Madness of March is dying down now that we're in April, but the Auburn Tigers have redefined the role of unexpected party-crasher. Having beat the Big 12 powerhouse Kansas in the second round of the NCAA tournament, they faced the top seeded ACC North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet 16. Led by Jared Harper and 11 assists and 9 points in 25 minutes, the Tigers separated quickly from Carolina for a 97-80 victory. But it was in the Elite 8 against another powerhouse and fellow SEC rival Kentucky that Harper really shined. He poured in 26 points, highlighted by 11-11 from the free throw line (and 12 points in overtime out of his team's 17 total) to defeat the Cats and avenge their last loss on February 23. Yes. They haven't lost in over a month. The Tigers look poised to beat their next Goliath and it will be on the leadership of our Sportsman of the Week, Jared Harper!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/26/2017
"The Shot." Or to some (with deference to Christian Laettner) "The Shot Part 2." North Carolina slayed a feisty young Kentucky team on a last second jumper that ended a wild sequence just after Kentucky had tied it up. The shot sent the Tar Heels to the Final Four. Sportsman of the Week Luke Maye did the work in his last second (well, 0.3 left) bucket to slay the Wildcats and break the hearts of the Bluegrass faithful. But really, the entire regional finals, Maye was a portrait of efficiency. Coming off the bench for the two games (first one a win against Butler), the 6'7" sophomore tallied just 45 minutes, one full regulation plus overtime game. In that time, he netted 33 points and 15 boards, more than 0.75 points per minute of action, and 1 rebound every 3 minutes. No other Tar Heel was so efficient in scoring. But make no mistake, his winning Sportsman of the Week is about the clutch. He'll be ready to tangle in the desert in the next round. A round North Carolina may not make without his heroics.

J.R. Ewing College Football Picks: 11/5/2016
![]() |
| J.R. says "Don't mess with [betting on] Texas" |
Summary:
Previous Week: 3-2 (+80)
Season: 26-18-1 (+$620, 12.5% profit)
As the College Football Playoff poll is released, there is sudden focus on the eye test where teams on the outside looking in may look to push the score up a bit more than in previous weeks with the new urgency. Teams in the playoff suddenly are targets to upsets. All that being said, I like five underdogs this week, all are between 2.5 and 7.5 points, many at home.
Pittsburgh (+3) at Miami (12:30 p.m. EDT)
This is a game of teams going in opposite directions. Once the competition stepped up, Miami has stepped aside. Meanwhile Pittsburgh is playing some good football, with a narrow loss to impressive Virginia Tech and a win over Penn State. Meanwhile, Miami has lost four straight both straight up and ATS. I like the better football team here, and that's Pittsburgh. Home field is almost irrelevant since kickoff is so early.
Oklahoma State (+3) at Kansas State (3:30 p.m. EDT)
Oklahoma State has won four straight Big 12 games, including a throttling of previously undefeated West Virginia. Kansas State is well coached, but under talented. I would nod the Cowboys by a point or three, so if you're giving me points, I'll take the Pokes, even in Manhattan.
Arkansas (+4) vs Florida (3:30 p.m. EDT)
This is an SEC East vs. West play. The East seldom beats the West, and Arkansas is a solid team. They're coming off a humiliating loss at Auburn and will have something to prove. Florida just keeps on playing defense and winning, but, again, give me some points at home with an East team playing at West, I'll go West.
Kentucky (+2.5) vs Georgia (7:30 p.m. EDT)
What is it going to take to get bettors to believe in Kentucky? Three straight conference wins, 5-1 in their last six games, and five straight covers. Meanwhile Georgia is struggling, which is what happens when you have a freshman QB and new head coach. Georgia hasn't won on a Saturday since September 17, a one point squeaker over awful Missouri. If you look at the rosters, Georgia should win this. But Kentucky is playing some good football.
LSU (+7.5) vs Alabama (8:00 p.m. EDT)
It's rare that Alabama runs the SEC gauntlet unscathred, there's always a tough road game where they play a bit below par and the other team steps up. LSU is playing well under Coach Orgeron and would love to play spoiler to their rival. Given the betting line just above a TD, I'll take my chances on a wild game in the Swamp and a Tigers cover.
It's November, the peak of College Football season! Enjoy your Saturday!
